How we can help

Treatment starts with understanding your experience and choosing a plan together.

Therapy that fits your needs

Therapy offers a place to understand patterns and practice changes that support daily life. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, looks at connections between thoughts, feelings and actions. Behavioral activation helps you gradually reconnect with manageable, meaningful activities.

Medication when appropriate

An antidepressant may be part of your plan. Your prescriber explains the expected benefits, possible side effects and when to review your response. Improvement can take several weeks, and the timing varies. Contact your prescriber about concerns rather than changing or stopping medication on your own.

Coordinated follow-up

When you receive both therapy and medication care here, your clinicians coordinate the plan. Follow-up considers your symptoms, daily functioning, preferences and side effects. If previous treatments have not helped enough, we review that history and discuss other options.

Your first visit

A conversation about what has been happening and what you would like to change.

What we discuss

Bring a list of medications, previous treatments and any changes in sleep, appetite or concentration. We discuss how you have been feeling, how long it has lasted and what you hope will improve. The evaluation also considers physical health, substance use and other conditions that can affect mood. Further assessment may be needed before a diagnosis is clear.

Planning the next step

We explain the options, answer your questions and discuss follow-up based on your needs. You can ask about benefits, possible risks and other approaches before making a decision.

All visits are in person at 10 Princeton St, Ste N, West Hartford, CT 06110. We do not offer telehealth.

Preparing for your first appointment

Understanding depression

An evaluation considers the full picture, including other concerns that may overlap.

More than a difficult day

Depression can affect mood, energy, sleep and interest in everyday life. A major depressive episode involves symptoms that persist for at least two weeks and interfere with daily functioning. Symptoms can follow a loss or stressful event, or appear without an obvious trigger. You can ask for help before you know whether depression is the explanation.

Understanding the pattern

Some people have separate episodes; others experience symptoms over a longer period. Depression can also occur around pregnancy or follow a seasonal pattern. Your history helps guide treatment, including checking for past periods of unusually high energy or little need for sleep that may suggest bipolar disorder.

Signs you may recognize

These examples can help you describe what you are experiencing. They are not a self-diagnosis.

Common experiences

  • Feeling sad, empty, irritable or hopeless
  • Losing interest in activities or relationships
  • Changes in sleep, appetite or energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Pulling away from people or struggling with daily tasks
  • Thoughts of death or self-harm, which deserve immediate support

When to reach out

If symptoms are affecting daily life, relationships or your ability to look after yourself, it is reasonable to ask for support. You do not need to be certain about a diagnosis before contacting us.

Notes about when symptoms happen, what makes them better or worse, and what you have already tried can help start the conversation.

Questions about depression

Practical answers to help you decide on your next step.

Can depression happen when there is a clear reason for feeling sad?

Yes. Depression can develop after stress or loss, and grief and depression can occur together. The duration, symptoms and impact on your life help a clinician understand what support may help.

Do I have to take medication?

Not every treatment plan includes medication. We discuss therapy, medication when appropriate, and your preferences. Recommendations depend on your symptoms, history and level of support needed.

What if antidepressants have not helped?

We review which medications you tried, their doses, how long you took them and what happened. Our treatment-resistant depression page explains options after previous treatment has not provided enough relief.

How long will I need care?

There is no single schedule. Your clinician will discuss when to review progress and how to support improvement over time, including after you begin feeling better.

Are appointments in person or online?

All appointments are in person at our West Hartford office for adults 18 and over. We do not offer telehealth.

Do I need a referral, and how do I check cost?

You can request an appointment directly. Insurance requirements vary, so the office can help check whether your plan requires a referral or authorization and discuss expected costs. Contact us about coverage or self-pay before scheduling.
