How we can help

Treatment starts with understanding your experience and choosing a plan together.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia

CBT-I is a structured treatment and is usually the first treatment recommended for long-term insomnia. It addresses habits and thoughts that can keep sleep difficulties going. It is more than a list of sleep-hygiene tips.

A plan based on your sleep pattern

A sleep diary can help your clinician understand the pattern. Treatment may involve changes to time in bed, the connection between bed and sleep, and responses to sleep-related worry. These changes are individualized and monitored rather than a schedule to try on your own.

Medication and medical referrals

Medication may be considered in some situations, with discussion of benefits, risks and duration. Suspected sleep apnea or another medical sleep disorder may need a referral. This office provides behavioral health care, not overnight sleep studies.

Your first visit

A conversation about what has been happening and what you would like to change.

What we discuss

Bring information about your usual bedtime, wake time, naps, caffeine, medications and daytime symptoms. If you have a sleep diary or previous sleep evaluation, bring it along. We discuss what has been tried and whether further medical assessment is needed before selecting a plan.

Planning the next step

We explain the options, answer your questions and discuss follow-up based on your needs. You can ask about benefits, possible risks and other approaches before making a decision.

All visits are in person at 10 Princeton St, Ste N, West Hartford, CT 06110. We do not offer telehealth.

Preparing for your first appointment

Understanding sleep difficulties

An evaluation considers the full picture, including other concerns that may overlap.

When sleep becomes difficult to sustain

Insomnia can mean trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or returning to sleep after waking too early, despite an opportunity to sleep. It also affects daytime functioning. Chronic insomnia involves a persistent pattern; you can ask for help before a problem becomes long-lasting.

Sleep deserves its own assessment

Insomnia can occur on its own or alongside anxiety, depression, pain or another health condition. Medication, substances and sleep routines can also contribute. Snoring, breathing pauses or severe daytime sleepiness may point to a sleep disorder that needs medical assessment.

Signs you may recognize

These examples can help you describe what you are experiencing. They are not a self-diagnosis.

Common experiences

  • Lying awake for long stretches before sleep
  • Waking often or too early and struggling to return to sleep
  • Worrying about bedtime or whether you will sleep
  • Daytime fatigue, irritability or concentration problems
  • Changing routines more and more in an effort to catch up on sleep

When to reach out

If symptoms are affecting daily life, relationships or your ability to look after yourself, it is reasonable to ask for support. You do not need to be certain about a diagnosis before contacting us.

Notes about when symptoms happen, what makes them better or worse, and what you have already tried can help start the conversation.

Questions about insomnia

Practical answers to help you decide on your next step.

Is CBT-I just advice to avoid screens?

No. General sleep habits can matter, but CBT-I is a structured treatment that works with sleep patterns, behaviors and thoughts. Your clinician explains the components that fit your needs.

Can insomnia happen without depression or anxiety?

Yes. Insomnia can be a condition in its own right. It can also occur with other conditions, and both may need treatment.

Do you provide sleep studies?

No. If symptoms suggest sleep apnea or another disorder requiring a sleep study, we discuss medical evaluation or referral.

Should I stop a sleep medication before the appointment?

Do not change a prescribed medication on your own. Bring the medication list and discuss any concerns with the prescriber. If sleepiness affects safe driving, avoid driving and seek medical advice.

Are appointments in person or online?

All appointments are in person at our West Hartford office for adults 18 and over. We do not offer telehealth.

Do I need a referral, and how do I check cost?

You can request an appointment directly. Insurance requirements vary, so the office can help check whether your plan requires a referral or authorization and discuss expected costs. Contact us about coverage or self-pay before scheduling.
